Getting to Know our Designers :: Derek Lam

Derek Lam, a San Francisco native and Parsons graduate, worked for designer greats such as Michael Kors before realizing that he wanted to start his own line in 2002. His sophisticated, modern style has captivated women and the design world since the first collection. With a focus on fit and fabric, Lam captures femininity through a sleek silhouette, and an unfussy aesthetic. 

While many designers look to the past for inspiration, Lam is inspired by the modern woman and the current moment. His designs utilize sexiness and luxury while remaining extremely wearable and flattering.

Whether its designing the perfect trench coat or having fun with print, Derek Lam is setting the bar for modern luxury fashion.

Getting to know our designers: Derek Lam - McMullen exclusive Q&A

The excitement is building for the 10 Crosby launch party and trunkshow at McMullen this month! We went behind the scenes with designer Derek Lam to bring you the insider scoop on his new line 10 Crosby and his philosophy on style...

Derek Lam, a native of San Francisco, began his fashion career in 1990 after graduating from Parsons School of Design. Lam spent twelve years at the highest levels of American fashion as a designer at Michael Kors before starting his own label. In 2006 the collection expanded to include handbags, followed by shoes and eyewear in 2007. In June 2011, he presented his first ever diffusion line “10 Crosby Derek Lam” named after the address of the Derek Lam headquarters in downtown Manhattan. (read more here).

 “My idea for this collection is to reach a woman who wants urban clothing that will carry her through every aspect of her life, from the more formal, go to work occasions and also for the more informal aspects of her life. It really is the look which I see all around me, whether it be right out my window, on Crosby street, to Los Angeles or Dallas.” He also added, “this new line has a more accessible approach while maintaining my core principles: Clothing of value and integrity of design.” 

McMullen Q&A with Derek: We asked Derek some questions about his new line, fashion philosophy and style tips to share with you...

1. What was your inspiration for the Spring 2012 collection of 10 Crosby?
For Spring 2012 I wanted to reinterpret Spring classics for the modern 10 Crosby customer.  Initially I was inspired by the clothing and graphics of 1960s mod.  I wanted to take the crisp freshness of fashion from that era and create a modern wardrobe.

2. How do you stay motivated and inspired everyday?
Since our headquarters is on Crosby street I can sit in my office and watch the most interesting fashionable downtown women walk by.  This street has been the major influence for 10 Crosby Derek Lam.

3. What are you most excited about in fashion right now?
Reimagining classics with unexpected twists.

4. What is your top style tip for women (of any age)?
Incorporate saturated bright colors and graphic prints in your wardrobe.

NY Fashion Week :: Derek Lam Fall 2012

"Thoughtful, quiet, a little more sober," is how Derek Lam described his new collection. Lam's show had a sixties vibe that went beyond the bouffant hairdos and smoky cat eyes. Ruby Aldridge's white peacoat, poplin shirt, V-neck, and full black skirt conjured visions of some quirky coed, only in real life her jacket probably wasn't shearling, the sweater wouldn't have been cashmere, and the skirt most definitely wasn't black patent. As always, there was great outerwear here, but Lam de-emphasized fur in favor of down, cutting a jacket and vest in neat, trim shapes.When it came time for the final passage of eveningwear, we were firmly in the present. Only a high-tech mill could pull off those Aran sweaters made from twisted nylon tulle, and only a modern-thinking designer would pair them with long chiffon skirts trailing trains.To read more visit Style.com.
