Talking with Timo

Images of Timo's bag, shoes, and surfboard from thecoveteur.com.

Funny, stylish, and intelligent are just a few ways to describe ecclectic and rising star fashion designer Timo Weiland. Born in rural Nebraska and raised between New York City and Florida, Timo seems to embody a multitude of American styles at once, ranging from preppy to urban chic to beachy cool.
Timo's interest in fashion began at a young age, brought on by his mother who taught him how to sew. While Timo's personal interests lie in the arts, he took a more traditional route by majoring in Economics, Spanish Literature, and Business Management at Vanderbilt university. After college, Timo paired with Alan Eckstein, an FIT marketing grad to start his eponymous line.
Both completed internships in the fashion industry, shared interests in travel, history, and style, and started the line to reflect their similar aesthetic tastes.
We love Timo's bold use of enlarged prints and bright spring colors. His shapes are flirty and chic with a sense of fun, easy femininity.

McMullen: What is your favorite vacation destination?
Timo Weiland: The South Island of New Zealand- I am an outdoor / adventure sports guy

MM: Cake or pie?
TW: Cake! or since I reside in NYC, cupcakes!

MM: Describe your muse…
TW: She is in control of her destiny, knows what she wants, independent, strong, quirky-cool, tomboy-pretty

MM: What inspired you for your spring collection?
TW: The work of graffitti artist Keith Haring and downtown New York City in the 1980s

MM: You majored in a lot of different subjects in College. Which has served you the most in terms of inspiration for your designs and collections?
TW: My extracurricular activities were most impactful such as founding the "Surf Club" and renting an art studio in the Cheekwood Mansion's stables (*a gorgeous historic estate off of BelleMeade Blvd in the hills of Nashville)

MM: City or countryside?
TW: City (NYC) on the weekdays, countryside (upstate NY or the Hamptons) on the weekends...

MM: Describe your go-to outfit for yourself.
TW: Fitted black jeans, a polka dot chambray button-down, a leather bomber jacket, colorful socks and worn-in wallabee lace-up shoes!

MM: What do you like to see women wearing?
TW: Day-to-night looks that flatter their individual shape and style. I like women who take calculated risks with their personal style- by pushing the envelope and dressing "forward" but in a beautiful way
