Get to know our designers :: Demy Lee ~ a McMullen exclusive Q&A

In the climate of the Bay Area layers are a must and we can never get enough of Demy Lee's impeccably designed cashmere sweaters and chic interpretation of the classics. Her Spring line is full of light weight knit staples that feel easy and always pulled together.

About Demy Lee:
Demy Lee moved to New York City from her native Korea when she was fifteen, and later graduated from Parsons School of Design.  Demylee’s design-driven, stylish look was garnered from Demy’s years of experience as a women’s collection designer at Calvin Klein, GAP, and later at Tory Burch, where she played a key role in launching the brand.    Always a perfectionist, Demy learned everything she could about cashmere upon starting her line, from the ideal climate for the Inner Mongolian goats that are used, to fiber length and yarn processing. The result was impeccable production quality.
Demy expanded the line to include cut and sew tops in pima cotton for Spring 2010, thus increasing her product offering for those looking for lighter weight wardrobe staples.  Demy continues to focus on “classic but current” knits, thus filling the niche for a fashion piece with an American sportswear ease.

Q : What was your inspiration for your Spring 2012 collection?
A : I was first inspired by photographs of Jackie O on holiday in Capri, Italy.
I wanted to recreate the look and feel of an American vacation in the 60’s,
but with my own modern touch. I drew inspiration from the nature of the sea,
as well as from the idea of a classic yacht excursion, so my collection includes
a sort of contrast between gentle hues and silhouettes and more severe
stripe patterns and crisp lines.

Q : How do you stay motivated and inspired everyday?
A : Inspiration is really everywhere. I’m inspired by everything in my daily life,
from random pedestrians on the street to the tacky outfits that my daughter
puts together. My true motivation is love and support from my family and friends.

Q : What are you most excited about in fashion right now?
A : Being individual. Back then, there was a certain “look” that everyone
followed, a standard that was expected by the culture of the time.
But there’s no correct formula in fashion today. Fashion today incorporates
the old with the new, the modern with the traditional,
the cosmopolitan with the ethnic…
People really know how to create “newness" in their own ways.

Q : What is your top style tip for women (of any age)?
A : Effortlessness, comfort, simplicity… And above all, confidence!

Q : What's your favorite summer indulgence?
A : Crisp white, fun colors, great sunglasses… Summer is the ideal season
to indulge in a bold look. I like to pair an exquisite printed sundress
with sunglasses and a basket tote.
